Races Around Here: Running of the Jackets 1 Mile and 5k (Also, Pancakes!)

Register: Active.com

What: Running of the Jackets 1 Mile and 5k run/walk
When: Oct. 27, 2012. 8 a.m. start for the mile. 8:30 a.m. start for the 5k.
Where: Jeff Davis High School

This posting is a little different from our usual race posting as this is also the official homepage for the Running of the Jackets. This race and walk is a joint fundraiser for the Jeff Davis High School tennis team and Drama Club. At this point, the route is still being planned, but this posting will be updated with a course description and a link to course maps as soon as that is finalized.

In addition to the races, there will be a pancake breakfast as part of the event. You do not have to run to buy tickets for the pancake breakfast, but all runners get free entry to the breakfast with their race number. Tickets for the pancake sale will go on sale closer to the event date.

To register, go to our online registration at Active.com and sign up. If you prefer to register by mail or in person, a registration flyer will be posted here soon. Race-day registration will be available for any who wish to wait until the last minute to sign up, but T-shirts are only guaranteed to those to pre-register.

There will be trophies for the overall male and female finishers for both the mile and 5k races and there will be medals for the top three finishers in each age group. The age groups are as follows:

  • 4 and under
  • 5-6
  • 7-8
  • 9-10
  • 11-12
  • 13-15
  • 16-19
  • 20-29
  • 30-39
  • 40-49
  • 50-59
  • 60-69
  • 70 and over
And if you're worrying about that Georgia-Florida game that Saturday, the race will be over in plenty of time for you to get ready for some football.

Rides Around Here: Ride for the River Century

There will be a century bike ride in Jesup on Nov. 10, 2012. Deadline for online registration is Nov. 5. This ride will include parts of Wayne, Long, McIntosh, and Glynn Counties. For those not up for the full 100 miles, there are 28-mile, 42-mile, and metric century (62 miles) options. The ride is a fundraiser for the Altamaha River Partnership which works to preserve the Altamaha River, one of the Nature Conservancy's "Last Great Places."

Races Around Here: Tri for the Girls

Despite the name, Vidalia's Tri for the Girls is not a triathlon only for women. Instead, the name is a reference to the breast cancer charity the event helps. The event, on Oct. 6, 2012, includes a triathlon, duathlon, and 5k. The bike leg on this event is relatively short at 10.8 miles, but is otherwise a normal sprint-distance event.

Races Around Here: Farm Day 5k and 1 Mile

The Saturday of the Farm Day festival in Lumber City, GA, usually features a 5k and 1-mile race. While the registration pdf currently has the dates for last year on it, from what I've heard, there still should be a race on September 8.

Races Around Here: Pirates on the Run 5k & 1 Mile

Baxley, GA, seems to have an unusual number of races for such a small town and if last year's Fall Fitness and this year's Tree Trek races are any sign, they're very well run. A third 5k and 1 mile race will be held at the high school's tennis and baseball complex (behind the school) on August 18, 2012. From what I've been able to find out, registration the day of may be the only way to sign up for this event. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and the 1 mile kicks off at 7 p.m. with the 5k following at 7:30.

Races Around Here: Heels and Wheels Triathlon, Waycross

The Heels and Wheels for Megan's House Triathlon & Duathlon Challenge will be held at Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross, GA, August 25, 2012. The sprint triathlon course is a quarter-mile swim, 13-mile bike, and 3-mile run. The duathlon course is a 2-mile run, 13-mile bike, and 3-mile run. If you register by August 1, the price for entry is $50. After that, it's $60 until August 22, and it's $75 the day of the race. If you're a triathlete in southeastern Georgia, please make sure to include this in your race schedule if at all possible. We really want to encourage these events when they're in our back yard.

Welcome

This will be the online home for the South Georgia Endurance Club, a group for runners, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes in the area around Hazlehurst, GA. It is my hope that this club will grow to the point that we can begin offering group runs/rides/swims, organize events for the public, and compete in regional events as a team. If you would like to become a founding member, contact Jacob Johnston at aracauna@hotmail.com.
